Summer Security

Summer Security

As we’re deep into the thick of the summer holidays, what security measures are in your home is probably the last thing on your mind. But the change in season brings new threats and risks. According to ‘Statista’, “The latest numbers on burglary show that in 2021 there have been 267,000 burglaries reported across the UK”. This staggering number is evidence that your home needs more protection now than ever.

Thefts will know when you’re out and about and will know when is best to invade. Therefore, here at Total Safes, we believe that security should always be a priority, and that’s why we’ve listed five security tips to help you this summer.

  1. Keep all windows and doors locked

As the hot weather rolls in, leaving doors and windows unlocked and open will be tempting to let air into your home. As the nights are lighter, you may even forget to lock them both overnight. Therefore it’s vital to keep all windows and doors locked when not in close vicinity. If anyone tries and enters, it will be much more challenging. Another tip could be to have a whiteboard beside your front and back door and write a reminder to lock up your house just before you leave!

  1. Install a home security system

Having your own home security system means that you will have peace of mind once you leave your house. Adequate alarm coverage in your home alongside security cameras and lights means that potential thieves will be deterred from possible break-ins. Advanced systems allow you to control your security at home. This also means that you can keep an eye on everything even when you’re gone.

Home security systems can be as expensive or inexpensive as you’d like. According to ‘TheEcoExperts’, “At least 32% of British households have a burglar alarm”, meaning had they had them, their property may have been under less of theft. Home security systems can be as simple as a single security light right up to having ring doorbells, electronic locks, and top-of-the-range security cameras, but anything is better than nothing!

  1. Don’t promote your holiday on social media until you’re at home

As tempting as it may be to show off to your followers that you’re on the beach sipping a cocktail, it is best to wait until you’re back on home turf. This is vital as anyone will be able to see that you’re not in your home there, giving them the opportunity to burgle your house. Sharing your holiday, especially when your account is not on the most secure settings, means potential thieves can be alerted of your absence and vulnerability of your home. Your empty house allowed for the perfect opportunity for a break-in, and they know no one is there to fend them off. Therefore refrain from posting the holiday snaps until you’re home!

  1. Make it appear as if you are home

An excellent deterrent for intruders is making them believe that you’re not away from your home. Timer switches and smart outlets connected to LED bulbs allow lights to turn on a time delay making it appear as if you’re in, even if it’s only for an hour a day. Another way to help keep your peace of mind is to have a neighbour or family member come around during the day to keep an eye. Make sure that the person you’ve asked is trustworthy and reliable, so you know your belongings are protected. If they agree to look after the house, ask them to grab your post daily, take in bins, and park their car in your driveway. Since it seems like someone is home, potential thieves are more likely to stay away for fear of being caught and apprehended.

  1. Purchase a safe via Total Safes

As you’re aware, Total Safes offer a wide range of safes to help all your security needs. Safes are a great way to ease your mind that you know where your belongings are when you’re not at home. Just pop your belongings into it once you’re leaving, such as car keys and other important documentation and forget about it until you return. A safe acts as a deterrent against intruders as they are hard to break into when adequately installed and take a long time to break into. Intruders would worry about time as they usually have to get out of the property quite quickly. According to ‘TheEcoExperts’, “An average burglary takes less than 10 minutes”, hopefully breaking into one of our safes should take a lot longer than that! Safes don’t need to break the bank as plenty of affordable options are available to help suit everyone’s budget.
